Events
Young Workers Forum
Sunday, November 20 (Westin Bayshore Hotel)
9:00 am – 12:00 pm
Join young workers from across BC ahead of Convention to discuss the most current issues and campaigns in the labour movement. You'll hear directly from young workers who organized the first Starbucks locations in Canada right here in our province. You'll get a solid orientation of the ground rules of Convention and deepen and build new relationships with other rad unionists through labour trivia and human bingo with prizes! Plus you'll hear directly from the co-chairs on what convention is at its core and why unions are the best way for young workers to have a say in their working and living conditions.
Human Rights Forum
Sunday, November 20 (Westin Bayshore Hotel)
1:00 pm – 4:00 pm
Join us as we gather to hear from the BCFED Equity reps, and other experts on Human Rights topics affecting the lives of working people in BC. Get a sneak peak at resolutions that will hit the floor of Convention, and network with a diverse and passionate group of activists from regions all across the province.
BCFED Human Rights Night (Westin Bayshore Hotel)
Monday, November 21
7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Challenging systemic oppression: Tools for workers — Convention delegates are invited to join us as we discuss systemic issues in BC and the tools workers have in their hands to change the status quo. We will take a look inside BC’s Human Rights Commission, find out how we can be involved in the shaping of BC’s Anti-Racism legislation, and learn about the work of our friends in the Hospital Employees' Union to challenge anti-Indigenous racism within the healthcare system. You won’t want to miss this session!
United Way Lunchtime Panel (Vancouver Convention Centre)
Tuesday, November 22
12:00 pm – 1:00 pm
Stronger Unions Make Stronger Communities: A United Way Conversation — Join United Way British Columbia and United Way Southern Vancouver Island for an engaging discussion with labour leaders from across the province about the importance of strong unions as forces that help build up strong communities.
We'll have a four-person panel chatting about emerging issues in unions and in communities, how they mirror each other, and how drawing unions and community organizations (like United Way) closer actually build a stronger and more resilient space for all of us.
A free boxed lunch will be served at this event. Reserve a spot here.
BCFED Women and Gender Rights Forum (Westin Bayshore Hotel)
Tuesday, November 22
7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Leadership on Safety, Economic Participation, and Representation — Delegates are invited to spend an evening with us, exploring the rights of women and gender diverse people with community experts who work tirelessly in community, our unions and government to ensure women and gender-diverse people have a fair chance. Our guests will explore themes of safety, economic participation, and representation from an intersectional lens. We look forward to seeing you there!
Lunch and Learn
Harassment and Violence in Canadian Workplaces: It’s [Not] Part of the Job"
Wednesday, November 23 (Vancouver Convention Centre)
12:00 pm – 1:30 pm
One of the most popular sessions at every convention is our Lunch and Learn. This year we will explore the results of a major project undertaken by the Canadian Labour Congress on violence in the workplace, presented by Jessica Montgomery. Naleena Gounder will present on Mental Health in the Workplace and Coleen Jones will moderate.
You won’t want to miss this presentation and discussion. This is a ticketed event – and with your ticket we provide a bagged lunch. Tickets will be on sale at the registration table at the convention hall starting the afternoon of Monday, November 21.
Convention Reception
Thursday, November 24 (Westin Bayshore Hotel)
7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Join us for the convention reception as we get close to the close of the 60th convention of the BC Federation of Labour. A great chance to relax after a week of hard work, network with old and new friends, and share a laugh together before our final day of proceedings.
